Music is the universal language of mankind.
–Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Who are we?
Formed in 2010, pianists Jeremy Rafal and Marie Blair came up with an idea to bring a group of classical musicians together to present classical concerts centered around a theme. In other words, the musicians would gather together various pieces that are seemingly very different from each other, yet they are connected with some underlying theme. A theme can be a simple as “water,” or it could be a program commemorating a single composer. To learn more about our individual artists, check out The Artists page.
What do we do?
So now you know that we do themed classical music concerts. From our roster of artists, we can have a variety of different pieces from solo piano music to small chamber pieces. Every program will vary on the venue, event, and of course, the availability of musicians. All in all, every program can be different with different artists and pieces, but still within the context of one unifying theme. Check out our Sample Programs page for an idea of what our programs look like.
Why do we do this?
Classical music is often times misunderstood in many communities, and one of the goals of the group is to help close the gap between the music and the audience. One way to do it is to present the music in a cohesive manner, by programming pieces together around a theme. Concerts are also to be presented with an educational but accessible lecture in order to engage the audience. That way, the audience will not only be able to enjoy the music, but also leave with a deeper appreciation of it.
When and where do we perform?
You can find our performances in smaller venues such as private residencies and bigger concert halls. This year, we have performances in public libraries, churches, private residences, and concert halls. Also, if you have a venue in mind, you can request to have Musica Thema come to your neighborhood. Well, that is if your neighborhood is around the New York City area. Our hope is to expand to other places in the United States and even abroad. Make sure to keep checking our Calendar of Events page to follow our performance schedule.
How much do your concerts cost?
We do our best to keep our concerts free of charge. But of course, like everything else in life, it is really hard to keep things free, and that’s why we always welcome donations from our audiences and sponsors.
